Ravello Wedding Photographer: Gardens, Terraces and the Long View

A Ravello wedding photographer's guide to Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo and the Belmond Caruso: the light at altitude, garden hours, and where the portraits happen.

Ravello is the coast seen from above: calmer, cooler, and built for long dinners.

While Positano and Amalfi sit at the water, Ravello is 350 metres up, on a saddle of rock between two valleys.

The light is different here, the air is a few degrees cooler, and the gardens have been drawing artists and composers for two centuries.

It is the Amalfi Coast for couples who want space, calm and a view that runs for miles.

Why couples choose Ravello

Ravello trades the drama of a vertical town for something more serene: historic gardens, cloisters, pergolas and terraces that seem to float over the Gulf of Salerno.

It suits garden receptions, candlelit dinners and guest lists that want room to move.

Because it is above the coast road, it also feels private in a way the seafront towns rarely do.

Where you can marry in Ravello

Villa Cimbrone: the Terrace of Infinity, the cloister and the gardens. One of the most photographed spots on the whole coast.

Villa Rufolo: the tower, the belvedere and the garden that inspired Wagner, with the festival stage suspended over the sea.

Belmond Hotel Caruso: the infinity pool terrace at cliff's edge, and arrivals by vintage wooden boat.

Palazzo Avino, Hotel Villa Maria and the Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer for receptions, plus the Duomo di Ravello for a Catholic ceremony.

What a Ravello wedding photographer plans around

Ravello's height gives you long, hazy views and a sun that sets behind the ridgelines rather than into open sea.

Sunsets are gentler and more layered: less fire, more watercolour.

The gardens open and close to the public at set times, so a Ravello wedding photographer plans portraits for just before opening or the last half hour before closing, when the day visitors have gone and the terraces are yours.

Ravello rewards patience. The pictures I care about here are the unhurried ones.

The couple session

The pergola walk at Villa Cimbrone, the cloister arches, the parapet at the Caruso, the crumbling stone of Villa Rufolo.

Evenings are cool enough that a walk between locations is a pleasure rather than a chore, which means we can take our time.

Practical notes

The drive up from the coast road is a series of switchbacks: roughly 25 minutes from Amalfi.

Evenings are noticeably cooler than at sea level. A wrap for the couple session is worth having. You can see the light up here in a vow exchange at Palazzo Avino.

Access to Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo gardens runs on ticketed hours; your planner will arrange a window.

Ravello works well in July and August precisely because it is cooler than the seafront.

What I believe

The long table under the lights, the guests lingering over dinner, the two of you at the end of the terrace with the whole gulf behind you.

Editorial and documentary, colour and black and white, always in natural light.

Frequently asked questions

Is Villa Cimbrone or Villa Rufolo better for photography?

Both are exceptional. Villa Cimbrone gives you the Terrace of Infinity and a long garden walk; Villa Rufolo gives you the tower and more texture. The right one depends on your guest count and how you want the day to flow.

Is Ravello good for a summer wedding?

Yes: more so than the seafront. At 350 metres the air is cooler and the evenings are comfortable even in August.

How do guests get to Ravello?

By private transfer or shuttle up from Amalfi or from their hotels. It is not walkable from the coast.

Can we have the ceremony and reception in the same place?

At venues like the Caruso, Palazzo Avino or Hotel Villa Maria, yes. At the historic gardens, dinner often moves to a nearby villa or hotel.

When is the light best for portraits in the gardens?

The half hour before the gardens close to visitors, or a private early window before they open.
